Never ignore a knock at your door. Use a peephole or install a simple intercom to check out unfamiliar knocks at your door. (chain locks are easily forced)
Never open your door to a stranger and don’t turn your back to a delivery person
Never allow a stranger inside your home...they could be casing it for a future break-in
Keep garage doors closed/locked and entrances between garage and home locked as well
Open windows are an invitation to intruders(Try to open ‘hard to reach’ windows and keep any ladders in a secure, out of reach area)
Keep windows on all levels closed and locked when you are not at home
Keep all shrubbery close to your house neatly trimmed (especially near doors and windows)
Keep your property well-lit
Keep your valuables well concealed (never in your bedroom or bathroom)
Keep your cars and bikes locked, even in the garage
When you purchase a big ticket item (ie. computer, tv) dispose of the packaging discreetly,so as not to advertise your new items
Maintain a watchful eye as your leave your house for anyone or anything suspicious
Get to know your neighbours. Look out for each other
When going on vacation, ensure... a) that mail is picked up and papers do not pile up at door b) the driveway is shovelled and lawn is cut c) Leave some lights on a timer
